The Yarn Preparation

The journey begins with selecting the finest natural fibers such as cotton or jute, ensuring quality from the very first thread. In the hands of the katwaris, each strand is aligned, cleaned and spun into yarn on the traditional charka, carrying forward a lineage of skill that has lived in Indian craft communities for generations. The yarn is then wound into soft hanks and immersed in boiling eco-friendly dyes. Once the colour settles, the hanks are lifted into open sunlight where the shades deepen naturally.

Weaving

Following an age-old tradition that once travelled from Persia to India, the weavers take their place at the loom and begin shaping each pattern with steady hands. They knot or weave every line with patience and skill, often working for months to complete a single piece. Their quiet focus gives every rug its depth and character.

Washing

Washers methodically pour water and a mild cleansing solution to pull out the dirt that every carpet has attracted. Each stroke with a large wooden paddle flushes out what is unnecessary and, at the same time, increases the strength of the underlying knots.

Gultarash

Gultarash is a specific technique that translates to “finding the flower”, since it was originally used to create a high-low effect that made the flower patterns pop out. Today, it is used to highlight motifs or patterns and to create a textural effect.
